How to search for records with minimum information

I have been told that my paternal grandfather, Arthur Sidney Platt, served in the Army presumably during the second world war. When he was alive he never mentioned it and I only found out after his death that he had served with REME.
Given that this is all I know is there any way I can trace his service history?
Any help gratefully received.

His record will be held by the MOD but you can apply for a copy, cost £30.
