George Denison - where did he go?
« on: Tuesday 08 June 21 19:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have posted before but thought I would try again. Here goes ...

I am looking for my 2x Great Grandfather George Denison. He was born in Rawdon, Yorkshire in 1844. He married Hannah Birch in Dudley, Staffs in 1870. They had 3 children, Thomas (B 1870), Gertrude Mary (B 1872) and Oscar (B & D 1874). Hannah was from Lichfield and all 3 children were born there.

The family moved around a bit. In 1871 the census has them in Lichfield, George is a Professor OR Performer of Music, in 1881 the census finds them in Bowling, Yorks and now George is an out of work cloth weaver. 1891 finds Hannah and Gertrude in Leicester. (Thomas is working in Notts) And George has disappeared. :o

This is the mystery! Hannah is cited as a widow from 1891 on census records, but I cannot find any death or burial information for George! And the whole family is buried at Gilroes in Leicester, but again, no George. My instinct is to trust she just said she was a widow, but that they split up or he ran off somewhere and I have tentatively looked into possible new marriages but haven't found anything. :-\

Any help in locating this man would be hugely appreciated!!!!

Thanks everyone!

Have you investigated the deaths in 1911 & 1913 spelt Dennison?

Are you sure you now have the right George?

Which of his children are you descended from - Thomas or Gertrude?

Thomas is my great grandfather, this is a certainty. His son, Thomas Harry is my grandfather and HIS son Roger is my father.  :)

That’s great - we just need to find George.  Ignore the 2 deaths I mentioned in my first reply.  I have checked census entries & they are not your George

Thanks!

Yes he is so elusive, surely there would be a death record if he died, unless it was destroyed in a records fire? I've tried to look in both Leicestershire & Bowling, Yorks as they are the residences in 1881 & 1891, but the family seemed to move a lot so ....  :-\

I'm intrigued by the diversity in his occupations in 1871 & 1881.  Music to cloth weaver??

Just a little bit of the George Denison Puzzle.

Baptism records are interesting too - Thomas and Gertrude (1870 & 1872) he is recorded as 'Vicar Choral'. Whis makes the census work as it was right in the middle of those births. When baby Oscar was born in 1874 they have moved from Litchfield as he was baptised in Wolverhampton, and George is recorded as a Watchman. Fast forward to the 1881 census and they are in Yorkshire and he is a cloth weaver.

Actually thats not quite true. Oscar was born in the 2nd quarter in Lichfield, so they moved to Wolverhampton sometime before December, where he was baptised and died.
