Help with a written question in Hansard and old money
« on: Wednesday 09 June 21 22:08 BST (UK) »
Basically, a relative of mine was fined £5 in 1923, which obviously is pre- decimalisation.

I am post decimalisation so I have a hard time understanding 'old' money.

I would like to work out what that £5 would have meant to him at the time. I know he was working a ship yard labourer.

I've found a written question in Hansard from 1925 which gives the average wages for ship yard for 1920 and 1925, which will give me an idea of what he might have been earning. The problem is, I don't understand what it's saying. I think that unfortunately the format of the table has gone a bit skew-wiff, but this is what I think it says. I will provide a link to the document below.

June 1920

22s 10d 70s

June 1925

6d 38s 5d

I would be grateful if anyone can help me make sense of this. Thank you.

Looks to me as though it should be in three columns, to show figures for July 1914, June 1920 and July 1925.  So for ship yard labourers for the years you are interested in, in June 1920 a weekly wage of 70s 6d (or £3 10s 6d) in July 1925 and 38s 5d (or £1 18s 5d).

There are 3 sets of columns; each set comprising shillings and pence.
The 3 sets are: July 1914, June 1920 and July 1925.

Shipbuilding Labourers earned 22s 10d in 1914; 70s 6d in 1920; and 38s 5d in 1925.

12 pence to a shilling; 20 shillings to a pound.

Thank you very much to both of you.

It's weird that it seems to have gone down in 1925 by so much from what it was in 1920. I guess 1920 was still the tail effect of the war? Maybe that made a difference?

In 1920 ships were being built to replace those lost during WW1, and there was a lot of work in the shipyards.  By 1925 this demand had been met and there was little or no work.  Workers would turn up and hope to get work, with skilled men and those known to the foreman being more likely to be chosen.
