Marriage Licence
« on: Thursday 10 June 21 15:02 BST (UK) »
My Great x5 grandparents were married by Licence - i have hit a real brick wall with him and was hoping to get a copy of the licence to see if it had any extra information e.g occupation.  I have searched the online Bristol archives and they do not have it.  Does anyone know where i could get a copy of it?

William Thompson and Sarah Court were married by Licence.

St Augstine the Less

William THOMPSON of this Parish and Sarah COURT of this Parish
Married in this Church by Licence

24 February 1778 - witnesses: Charles COURT and Mary COURT.

Any help gratefully received.

The licence is given to the couple to hand to whoever performs the marriage, they very rarely survive. You need to look for Marriage Allegations, again it is rather a case of pot luck.

I would recommend asking Bristol Archives about the Bond and/or Allegation for the marriage.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

They are available at Bristol Archives https://archives.bristol.gov.uk/records/EP/J/3/1 the year in which you are interested seems to be covered.

So would it be the case that the names are not searchable and i would have to get the file and search through the year? - i have put her name in the online search and nothing comes up -

You will not find them online as far as I'm aware.
The link I gave you simply shows what is held at the Record Office.
The best thing you could do would be to ask them if they have the one you are interested in and if they would do a copy for you, but I have no idea how much this would cost I'm afraid.

Not sure as every archive is different.  I would just contact the Archives and as you have the exact details of the marriage, they may be willing to co-operate.  Good luck.
