Her son John (7 Jan 1916 - 7 Apr 1916) is buried in Calvary Cem, Queens, according to findagrave, but Catherine doesn't show up when looking for other Ryersons in that cemetery. Still that would be the first place to look, I would guess.

NJ Marriage Index
1919
Howard Ryerson
Mae MacKrell
certificate 30493

-----------
When he registered for the draft in WWI he said he had a wife and child. The registration card is not dated. If he didn't marry Mae (Mary) until 1919, then was Catherine alive in 1918?

By the way, he served in WWI starting in Aug 1918 and was discharged in Nov 1918, he was not overseas.

I did see a Marriage in Manhattan 24th August 1912 to a Howard Ryerson of a Catherine Grandon but have no way of knowing if this is my Catherine.
The parents of that Catherine Grandon were James [Grandon] and Jane O'Donnell

Thank you to everyone for the invaluable information on Catherine Grandon. I would be interested in locating whether Catherine died or divorced but a death seems more likely as son was living with Father Howard and new family on the census. :)

Catherine may have died between 1915 and 1919. or they were divorced

That's what I've been thinking too.

They had a child in 1916 who only lived a couple of months.

James died at 119 West 3rd. Howard's birth place was USA.
---
Howard Ryerson was born in the US so the birthplace fits him.

I'm not finding any Howard McGuires who were born in the US and living in Manhattan in 1918.

I didn't see any McGuires living at 119 W 3rd in the 1918 City Directory, but there were 4 columns of them so I might have missed one.

Howard Ryerson is in the 1915 and 1916 NYC City Directory listed as a driver, living at 436 East 69th. He is not listed in the 1917 and 1918 Directories, so possibly he moved to NJ by then.

Their child John, who died in 1916, died at 1743 1st Ave, so maybe that was at a hospital or a friend or relatives ?? I don't know.

---------
So did Catherine Grandon have a child by a man named McGuire to whom she was not married? Then filled out the birth record using Howard Ryerson's information? I don't know.

I didn't see any Catherine McGuire, born about 1884 in Ireland, living in NYC with a husband Howard either.

And I looked for her using just her first name and parents' names and only found the 1901 census of Midleton which has been posted. Nothing in the US.

Is there any trace of her back in Cork as Grandin, Ryerson, or even maybe McGuire?

If he was born in 1893, he would have been required to register on 5 Jun. 1917.  However, an 1893 year of birth is off from the age he gave (23 years old) at the time of the 1912 marriage.  It could be a mistranscription of the marriage age, but thought it was worth noting.
