Help in reading and explaining a part of Army record
« on: Friday 11 June 21 20:19 BST (UK) »
Hi, I need help reading the small writing and can someone explain what is going on, please. The first part Jame Thomson is awaiting trial. The next bit it say reduced and imprisoned for over a year, what about good conduct badges, does he get them or loses them? And what else?

Thanks

Thanks Jebber. So that means he went to jail for 18 months and lost his badges as well.

Another record titled Military History Sheet, at the end it has education class2 and 3, this was military train class I presume?

Then what does it say by Cause of Discharge?
Looking at the last part of the page were he went to jail it has the date of 5 Nov 1881, this seams to be the last date of his service in the army. Is this corrected, for that is the end of the pages of service details.

The top image, Discharged Aberdeen.

Termination of second period of limited engagement.

The Certificate of Education are Classes 3, 2 and 1, three being the lowest grade and one the highest, more or less the equivalent of school leaving grades of the time. He had passed the first two.

Whilst he was imprisoned he would have forfeited all his pay so if he was married or had children any money he gave to them would also stop.

Thanks Jabber for the help  clarifying what is written on the papers.
jim1, thanks. now I know he only went to jail for 7 months, thank goodness. He was married and had two children, as Crumblie said he did not get payed so I wonder what the wife did. Probably had to get a job as a domestic.

It depends on if the wife & kids were "on the strength".
If they were they would have at least been in married quarters(such as they were)
& fed.
Many married women housed in the barracks like this did odd jobs such as washing
& darning etc.

Oh yes! forgot about that. How do I go about finding out if the wife was staying at the barracks?
