Confirming owner of Silver War Badge RN3246.
« on: Sunday 13 June 21 20:41 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Apologies to those readers who saw my last incorrect message.

I have in my possession a Silver War Badge with the number RN3246, which I thought belonged to my grandad William Kelly.  Checking Ancestry records, I see it comes up with a Phillips F?  O.N. J.46794  Rating Ord. Sea., issued 3rd November 1916.  I have no idea who this person is, or why we have it in our possession.  Can someone confirm I am on the right track so I don't go wasting my time seaching for this man?
Thanks, Paul.

A quick search of the Register of Seamen's Services at the National Archives for that service number produces the service record for a Frederick Phillips, J46794, born on 7 August 1892 in Liverpool, England. His pre-war occupation was apparently musician, and he joined on 6 November 1915, and was invalided out on 27 September 1916.

Ancestry connects his service record to the probate for a Frederick Phillips living at 325 Walton Lane, Liverpool, who died on 16 February 1920, with probate being granted to Sarah Jane Phillips, widow. Caveat emptor as always, and you would need to confirm this independently. There is, however, a baptism record from Liverpool, England on Ancestry for a Frederick Phillips born on 7 August 1892, father Charles Phillips and mother Sarah Jane Phillips, so it does look like the same man.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for that info.  I was just on FindMyPast and found that record.  Still not sure why we have this SWB.  Possibly a friend of the family back then, as I know Walton Lane and we did have some relations not far from there.  I know my grandad lived off Cherry Lane which is close to Walton Lane.
Best wishes and thanks again.
Paul.
