James Nathaniel Shuttleworth - Date of Death
« on: Tuesday 15 June 21 09:37 BST (UK) »
I have lots of information on James but unable to find out when he died. He was born in 1804 in Manchester. In 1819 he won an all-expenses-paid cruise and 14 years free accommodation in Australia. Jame arrived on the Mangles in 1820. He married Mary Ann Lewis in 1851. She died in 1915. I cannot find any record of his death.

To confuse the issue, at some point he started using the name Shattles. It may also have been Shuttle or Shattle on occasions. If that is not tricky enough, there was a James Naimby Shuttleworth in Sydney at the same time. Same middle initial. He died in 1859. He was a solicitor and bankrupt.

I have a timeline which can be downloaded https://www.dropbox.com/s/x6zbw0ejz1jrtmr/JamesNathenialShattlesAndMaryAnnLewis.pdf?dl=0

I hope someone can help.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I don't think it is this one. James Nathaniel was born in 1804 which makes him 61 in 1865. If he were 54 he would have been born in 1811 which means he was 11 when he came out as a convict in 1820.

His last child, Charles, was born in 1863. Emma who died in 1862 was only a year old.

I wonder if sometimes back then, deaths were just not recorded. I have been trying to find where he lived, and it may have been on the Hawkesbury River or it may have been in Auburn.

Thanks again for the reply.

Well, there seems to be a lot of discrepancy about the convict's age.
Here, when he married for the first time, with permission from the Governor, he was born 1799.
Or do I have the wrong man?

SHUTTLEWORTH, James
Per Mangles 1
Age - 31; Sentence - 14 yrs; Condition - Ticket of Leave.
To MUIRHEAD, Mary
Per Louisa
Age - 31;
Sentence - 14 yrs; Condition - Bond.   Sydney
Date 15 May 1830
By Revd J. D. Lang   (NRS 12212 [4/4508; Fiche 780])

Ages given at death are often inaccurate, so don't discount it because of that. Charles' birth was also recorded in the Windsor district, and the town of Windsor sits on the Hawkesbury River.

ADD: and Mary Ann was only 31 years old in 1865, so the death of James at this time can account for Charles being the last child to the couple.

Well, I'm not sure where Neville, our OP, arrived at the different birthdate, but the death certifiacte for the chap in Windsor might make an interesting read.

As a complete aside to the current inquiry.

All 3 men convicted in the above item from Matthewj64 got their Certificate of Freedom on the same date  ;D. Convicted together, travelled per Mangles1 together, freed together :D 1833
