Hi Kath

I think you will find that Joel's wife, Sarah Ashton remarried on the 11th October 1835. She married Thomas Broad (Broadhead) at Rotherham. They had children - William 31 Aug 1836, Thomas 1838 (mother's maiden name Ashton), Maria 1841 plus others. In 1841 they are in Ecclesall Bierlow with your Mary, who is down as Broadhead (aged 10). I think Joel must have been buried at Masbrough Independent Chapel on 4 Jun 1834 (NBI). The entry is just "Crookes" with no forename, but it seems a good fit. If you look for Thomas Broadhead on the 1851 census, you will see that he was born in Masbrough and Mary Anne was baptised in a non-conformist chapel.

I am descended from Joseph Crookes born abt. 1775 in Bradfield - actually twice - from two of his daughters!

Regards
Jenny

Thank you for your response. A bit to think about.  I am going to be away for a few days, then I will look at this information again and put all the pieces together in my records.  There had to be an answer, so again thanks for letting me know.

I have now had time to think and look at my records. I agree with you - no way I couldn't! the marriage of Sarah Crookes and the maiden name on birth records are pretty convincing.  I have now worked out that the Sarah Crookes who died was the 1810 Joel's brother George's wife, and the resident daughter Mary age 10 in 1841 was his daughter.

I have now swapped my Joels and can move on.  I don't have your Joseph on my records, so I may just take a look for him.
