Merchant Navy - Edward Tulloch
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 12:59 BST (UK) »
I've found the Merchant Navy apprenticeship record for Edward Tulloch - born 1828 Poole Dorset (Ticket # 343.940)
Apprent: March 1843, age 14y 5m on Caroline with Capt Laurence Tulloch (related??)

I also have all the ships he served on up til 30 Oct 1857 when he received his Masters Cert.
Last ship was Queen Victoria (served Mar 1857 - Aug 1857)

I have no idea what happened to him, the ship's he sailed or where he was, after 1857. Also haven't found a death for him.

Would anyone be able to find information or suggest where to look for Captain's records &/or possible discharge papers for Edward Tulloch please?

Thanks - would really appreciate help or guidance  :-*

See the probate record for Edward Tulloch (late of Calcutta) who died on 1 December 1876 at Kottree Sinde. Probate to his brother William Tulloch of Slaugham Park, Crawley. I think that may be your man?

Lloyd's Captains Register may supply the answers to your questions. Depends if he was involved with Foreign Trade. LCR doe's not have details for masters in the Home Trade. LCR are stored at London Metropolitan Archives. They have an excellent research service.
Do you have his masters certificate number?
I found a Edward Tulloch in the 1858 and later editions of the Mercantile Navy List. He obtained an ordinary masters certificate in 1857. London. Certificate number 12748.
https://www.maritimearchives.co.uk/mercantile-navy-list.html Page 88. I don't know if this is your man.
Do you have an official number for the ship QUEEN VICTORIA?
If indeed your man was certificate number 12748 it may be worth looking in the series BT122 at the National Archive. Kew. You would probably need to visit.

Do you know if he served on the Barque MERIDIAN as second mate in 1853?

Thanks Shaun - I'll follow that line. Not heard of Kottree Sinde before but do like the possible connection to William, his brother.

Yes Seaweed you have the right Edward Tulloch. - ordinary Masters Cert in 1857, cert # 12.748 (renewed)

Queen Victoria # 32177 as I see it

Looks like all information matches as he was on the Meridian. He received a gold medal and many accolades for his efforts in saving the passengers.

Unfortunately I can't visit Kew but maybe one day, when all the "fuss" dies down  :-\

Thanks for your help

" Kottree Sinde" is most likely the city of Kotri in Sindh province, on the banks of the Indus river.

Bombay and Calcutta newspapers in 1875/6 have shipping movement mentions of a Capt E Tulloch, master of the British ship St Bernard.

There were two British and Empire ships around in 1875/76
SAINT BERNARD Official number 43723 registered in Liverpool and SAINT BERNARD 30553 registered in Bombay.
Everything points to the Bombay registered vessel being the ship in question.
Suggest you contact National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, to see if they have her 1875 crew agreements.

Thank ShaunJ for the extra info.
