Sounds like a Shetland family!

Bests,
Skoosh.

Apologies Skoosh, missed your post
 - why would you think Edward was from a Shetland family?

To the best of my knowledge he was born & raised in Poole Dorset.

Tulloch is fairly common in the north of Scotland. The French wars had folk moving all over Britain plus the seafaring tradition which saw Shetlanders settle all down the east coast.  I have Orkney Tullochs and a Laurence Tulloch also, from Northmavine parish in Shetland, Laurence being a popular name with them. Once you get back into the early 18th century many of the Shetland names change every generation, James Laurenceson might be the son of Laurence Jamieson for example, a patronymic as in Norway etc. Tulloch is a Scots name so more likely to be passed on.
Could they even pronounce it in Dorset?  ;D

Bests,
Skoosh.

That's interesting Skoosh

It's possible that the Captain Laurence Tulloch of the "Caroline" may have been from up north but I haven't researched anyone other than Edward so far.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep it on file in case I find a connection later.

Lady Di, I would put money on it!  ;D

The Shetland Family History Society would be useful if you find a link.

Bests,
Skoosh.

There's a PCC will for a Laurence Tulloch of Poole who died in 1846. That was the year that Edward Tulloch's apprenticeship was cancelled, so it is very likely the same Laurence Tulloch.

There's an earlier PCC will for a Lawrence Tulloch of Poole who died in 1808.

Thanks for the reminder about the Wills. I usually check for those early in my search - obviously the brain wasn't working this time  ::)

I'll check them both and any others from the area.

Thanks again - appreciate the nudge in the right direction (again)  :D

This is Tony Gott's superb website on Shetland family histories, if you can get a connection the work is done for you! There is a Captain Edward Tulloch, master mariner but at a later date than yours, try the search-box.

Whilst acknowledging the information posted by Skoosh. 80/90% of the Masters I found in the National Archives series BT124, with the surname Tulloch. Came from Shetland, Orkney and other Northen Scottish locations.
However there was another Tulloch listed. James Street. Born 1826 in Poole Dorset. Mates certificate 67687 Issued in Poole 7/1/1851
