David Allan - Theft of Books
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 18:22 BST (UK) »
The St. Louis Post Dispatch of July 3, 1897 carries a story about a David Allan who was "examined" following his arrest for the theft of 600 books from 2 St. Louis libraries.  It does not say what happened to him afterwards.   I would to know the outcome of this.

Not seeing him in 1900 census. Perhaps he was in jail?

If this is the right David Allan, then he disappears from the St Louis City Directories for a couple years also.
1893
David Allan, bookkeeper [for] Bernard Gannon, rooms 1423 Webster Ave

1895
David Allen, properties Pope's Theatre, rooms 1223 Washington Ave

1897
David Allen, stage hand, rooms 1223 Washington Ave

1899
not listed

1901
David Allan, civil engineer, 78 DeMenil Building, 7th [floor?] southwest corner of Pine. rooms in Alton, Illinois
exact same listing under Allen, David

1903
David Allan, civil engineer, Century Bldg 313 North 9th, rooms 3204 Pine

-----------------
1900 census
as stated in the articles, he is not with his wife and family:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M38B-1XS

no help for 1900 from ancestry's hints nor from a family tree there.

There seems to be a relatively large folder for David at:

https://mohistory.org/files/indexed/Archives_Guide_MASTER.pdf

Scroll down to Allan, David (A0017).  You might be able to contact the museum for information on what is in his folder.

Genealiza.  Thank you for this information. I do have info. on his Civil War Service and copies of those letters as well as his death in Danville.  However, as you say, it says "27 Folders" which seems to indicate that there is more to learn.  I will contact the museum directly.
Thanks again.
Robert
