Cock and Rabbit
« on: Sunday 20 June 21 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
Does anyone know anything about this area?
I know its called after the Cock and Rabbit Inn, but thats all
Im trying to trace info on Ann Waters who was born there, but Im assuming it was the area rather than the Inn
She was born in 1870 and married William Hughes, also from the area
Their son Patrick was my husbands grandfather, which we have only recently discovered

The above Link provides some information, regarding the origin of 'The Cock and Rabbit Inn', although I'm not certain if this is the area where Ann Walters was born, as You haven't stated this.

According to the Marriage Registration, Ann Waters married William Hughes on the 25th October 1885.

Both parties were noted as being of Full Age. Therefore, that puts Ann Waters birth  year earlier than 1870, and assuming she was at least 21 years old, at the time of marriage, would give a birth year of 1864 or earlier.

Assuming of course, She gave Her correct age to the Registrar.

I have lots of references to the Cock and Rabbit Inn in Clonshaugh / Belcamp.  My great great grandmother Jane Gorman seems to have 'hung' around there or lived there, worked there.  I can references to it listed against her in the Petty Session Registers in 1873 and 187 for having a 'dodgy' scales.  I also found the Duchas article and looked at old maps but wasn't able to quite locate it.  According to Thom's Directory in 1876, a Walter Fottrell owed it.  Jane Gorman (nee Dowling) married a George Connor in 1876 following the death by drowing of her husband Terence in 1874.  Her address is listed as the Cock and Rabbit.  In 1873, when Jane and Terence's son Peter was born, again the Cock and Rabbit is listed.  Never really got the answer I was looking for in terms of her involvement - did she own it at some stage, were there rooms that families rented out...

From the book " Green Fields gone forever by Douglas Appleyard 1985.

In days of yore Clonshaugh had a very know Inn, The Cock and Rabbit. It stood nearly opposite the entrance to Priorswood, which was on the right hand side beyond the Schoolhouse.

Yes I bought that book.  With that an the entry from Duchas, I looked at GeoMaps and found the school but not clear still where the Inn was... see attached.

If traveling north, I am assuming that it stood just past of the school, where the apartments now stand.
