Catholic burials in Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 23 June 21 02:03 BST (UK) »
Having searched high and low for the death of Terence Keating in the BDMs and census records without success, I wondered if I might find him through burial records.

My previous post:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=839112.0

Terence was born 1838 in Limerick Ireland and last sighted in the  Liverpool Workhouse Religious Creed Register admitted 19 Sept 1902 from Standish Rd, discharged or died 30 Sept 1902. His wife Margaret appears in the record below him with the same dates.

Terence was listed as old and infirm. Does anyone know where patients from the Workhouse were buried?

A long shot, I know, but any leads gratefully accepted :-)

on your other thread Chempat suggested that it may be Terence Keegan died 1904 aged 66 - I tend to agree with Chempat - so if it is Keegan - he may be buried in Rake Lane Cemetery ?

Many thanks garstonite, I'd neglected to follow up the death Chempat suggested - lesson learned. And what do you know, Terence Keegan and Terence Keating are one and the same! As Terence Keegan he entered the Liverpool Workhouse several times during the 1890s - same details for occupation (slater), wife Margaret and where admitted from (23 Standish St). The only detail that doesn't match is his age on various records but that's not really a concern.

But I can't find them as Keegan in the 1891 or 1901 census records.

Re the burial - are records available for Rake Lane Cemetery?

Fantastic! Thanks jonw65, I never would have found this. Great to see all the details match, especially his age making his birth ca 1838.

Now to prove he's my Terence Keating bapt 1838 Limerick Ireland.  :-)

Oh no, I just found this record in the 1901 Irish census:

Terence Keegan, married, age 61, born Sligo, slater, Townland/Street Ballytivna

What are the odds? Can this be the same person who was in the Liverpool Workhouse in January and August 1899 and again in December 1900

I'm still trying to work out why there is one Workhouse record for the same person as Terence Keating!

Hi
Well found. He's in the Sligo workhouse, in the infirmary section by the look of it.
Disease Contusions, 4 months.

It's a long way from Liverpool!
Your man was from Limerick? So that doesn't fit, but could be a mistake.

Is there a possible death in Ireland?

Thanks again jonw65 - the census record fits with his stints in the Liverpool Workhouse which record an injury to his shoulder.

My mistake, my Terence Keating was baptised in Dublin in 1838. It was his father who came from Limerick. The family came to Australia in the 1840s, then Terence joined the Merchant Navy, last getting off the boat in Liverpool in 1855.

Only one death in Sligo, in 1929 age 59 so too young. I think the burial you found in Liverpool is the  right one.
