Annotation on 1939 Register
« on: Wednesday 23 June 21 15:47 BST (UK) »
Could anyone tell me what the annotation means above the middle entry for James Nevitt on this extract from the 1939 Register please. Is it a correction of his d.o.b.? But what does the NUO mean? I know you wonderful people will help. Thanks in advance.

NUO was the enumeration district code for Failsworth Urban District in Lancashire.
This indicates that the information leading to the amendment to the register originated in Failsworth District.

The original version of the date is 3 Jan 1920, and the amendment is 1 Mar 1920. In UK usage these could be written 3/1/20 and 1/3/20, but in US usage they would be the other way round.

I suspect this difference could be behind the confusion, but quite how and why it came about, and which is correct, I'll leave you or others to worry about.  ;)

Thank you again everyone, the original date is correct and I think that arthurk may have a good reason for the amendment.
