Hugh Wood, Canley Vale, NSW
« on: Wednesday 23 June 21 19:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, Hugh Wood was born in Wales.  He immigrated to NSW about 1887 and lived at Canley Vale.  Seemingly once there he re-invented himself, coming up variously as Huwie, Hewie, Huwie Henry Hughes Wood, Hewie H H Wood etc.  He died at Canley Vale in 1936.

Can any one please help me find out what he did for a living there?  In one directory I found him listed as a foreman, but nothing more.  I have checked Trove.

Many thanks, brigau

Hi,

I have checked my hardcopy of the NSW 1902 electoral roll for Canley Vale polling place in the then Parramatta electorate.   He is not listed.

What document informs you of his occupation?  Does it have more details?

Hi JM,

I’m sorry I don’t have any more.  I’m in the UK and just picked up the foreman info from the 1903 – 1904 Electoral Rolls for Liverpool, Campden when Ancestry gave a free World Wide subscription as a bonus over a weekend a few months back.  Thank you for looking, he's a bit of a pain with all his name variations.

Thanks,  so I will keep looking. It was not compulsory to enrol at that time.

Hi,
In Sands 1930 only one H Wood Canley Vale.
See attachment.
Had a look at bdm for NSW, nothing for Wood and Canley Vale, couldnt find his death in 1936 either which is strange, and nothing came up from a Trove search.
Electoral role search ends with Annie Wood.
Kind Regards

Thank you Paul,

This from the NSW bdm site. DEATH:

WOOD HUWIE HENRY HUGHES
19514/1936
EDWARD father
CATHERINE mother
LIVERPOOL district

His mam, Catherine Hughes, would have called him just plain Huw, why couldn't he stick to that

From 1930 to 1935, the NSW electoral rolls show
WOOD, Huwie Hughes
He was a foreman at Sackville Street Canley Vale. With wife Annie, Home Duties.
Another male of the surname shares the address.

There is a death notice in 1936.
Do you have that?

Hi Br1gau,
So the Annie Campbell marriage is the correct one.

Kind Regards
