Peter Jackson - Coroner's Report cause of death
« on: Thursday 24 June 21 02:49 BST (UK) »
Hi There

My 4x gr-grandfather died aged only 40 on the 23rd June 1847. I am having trouble discerning just how that happened from the coroner's report attached.

I have my ideas but don't want to influence you.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank You
Kim

My interpretation:
The person surname Jackson is the same as the line above ( hence "do" means ditto)
Apoplexy ( ie stroke) and intemperance (drunk)

Thank you so much!
It is as I thought. Of course one doesn't want to read intemperance and it was the curly bit at the front of the word that threw me.  Young age for a man to die of a stroke.

Thanks again :)

Hi Kim,

I think it is actually a dash and the opening bracket. (The brackets are relatively linear for something normally curved. Makes them look more like forward slashes, but I think they are supposed to be brackets.)

stroke.org.uk says:

Liver damage due to too much alcohol can stop the liver from making substances that help your blood to clot. This can increase your risk of having a stroke caused by bleeding in your brain.

So if he regularly overdid his tipple, his chances of a stroke were increased.  :(

Best regards,
Karen

Thank you Karen!

Peter was a soldier who had been serving as an escort and guard of convicts, so I am not surprised he drank.
As unsavoury as it is, this fact also may help solve a bit of a mystery in my family. They were strictly a 'no libations' lot until my grandmother discovered sherry  ;D. Perhaps his death had something to do with that.

Thank you again

You are most welcome!  :)

Hmmm...I haven't had a glass of sherry in years. I'm going shopping later...  :P ;D

Excellent Karen!
Corrupt a person a day, I say. My job is done.  ;D
Nanna would be proud.  ;)

Have a great day.

He could have had a medical condition that resembled drunkeness and was not recognised in those days.. better give him the benefit of the doubt. After all many soldiers post WW1 who had shell shock were labelled as drunks even if they weren't. Did the coroner actually see him drinking???

My ancestor was a doctor and coroner and he gave findings of "Act of God"
