I'm not disputing that a William James OSBORNE b. c. 1888 (s/o William and Mary) died in 1931 - there is evidence in the newspaper notice to that effect.
[No notice though to say he was also husband of Rose Mabel ?? ]
And right up until
1954 (Waitakere roll) ... when Rose Mabel OSBORNE has already had several changes of address, (and the opportunity to correct her then status), she's recorded as "married" ?? ]
The 1935 and 1938 (Auckland Central) electoral rolls also show a "
William James OSBORNE - waterside worker" at same address as Rose Mabel OSBORNE (married).
** So why these listings if the husband died in 1931 ... and the son is not yet of voting age ??
Electoral / voting rolls / Post Office-type address directories, can not be considered totally reliable sources- you should always back up with other "evidence", preferably in the form of official records.
I do note that William James OSBORNE on 1919 Auckland Central roll (with Rose Mabel at Victoria Street) is listed as "soldier". [And the only NZ Army file for a man of that name is for the man who had wed Frances Mary LOWE in 1915. ODD - he enlisted at Auckland in October 1917 - gave his mother-in-law (Mrs LOWE) as his next of kin (possibly she raised his child Alfred C.H. ?) He gave details of his marriage - and stated also that he was at that time married - and yet his wife Frances had been dead for a year ? His occupation was "meat grader" at Westfield Freezing Co. (previously in 1911 he was a butcher ) ... and later listed as a farmer of Otahuhu. ]

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=21382878&digital=yesIf you have access to a local library which has the microfiche record of New Zealand Births, then you could search those for the several years in which you think the "William James OSBORNE" son, might have been born. [Online, NZ Births only available up to "today's date", 1921. ]
The OSBORNE names you quoted earlier from the 1970's and 1980's electoral rolls, seem to have been from an unrelated family - resident in Waikato - search back to 1963.
