1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders
« on: Thursday 24 June 21 10:12 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

1 Batt. Seaforths were in India from 12Feb1903-30Dec1914.

(Playing lots of very successful football matches it would appear, and being proclaimed the best ever at tests.)
That aside, I'm looking to get a list of ALL officers present at this time especially 1905 onwards. How do I go about this?
Or do any of you already have, or have access to, this information?
Also, a colour-sgt. ... if promoted becomes a what?
Hope someone here can help, thanks VM.

Thanks Shaunj,
I'd completely forgotten about them, I have trawled through them, and very recently too.
Any ideas on ranking of colour sgt?
I had another question also which I  never asked: is there anyway to reverse check pension payments? i.e Know who the payments were made to, but don't know who they were made on behalf of, nor which dept./pension number they came from.
Did all pension payments come from one dept. or were there various?

On the pension question, I have no experience of tracing army pensions but I was able to trace a naval officer's widow's pension in the Paymaster General ledgers ( PMG19 in my case)  in the National Archives from 1884 through to 1929.

Thanks Jebbers, ShaunJ.
More queries:
Could a colour sgt eventually become a major?
Apologies for my complete ignorance on ranking.
If the person is a medical man, is there a separate register, list available or are they just another army corp, and listed the same as any other? (Hope that makes sense)

Yes - if he was commissioned his first commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and subsequent promotions would appear in The Gazette.

Medical officers would be listed in the Army Lists under Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).
