Found his record eventually.
It looks like his medical discharge has kept him out but by
1918 conscription had pretty much dried up & they've taken
another look at him & decided he was fit enough.
Not sure yet why the move was compulsory, I'll take a look at
the diary.

I'm not seeing any significant movement of men from one to the other.
I've looked at some Leics. records & there doesn't seem to be any
conformity when issuing numbers.
There are men with numbers from the same batch attesting as much as 3 years apart.

Probably a stupid suggestion but could Gent and Hill be the same person? It could explain how someone who was discharged and awarded a SWB later enlisted again. People enlisting under a different name wasn't exactly unusual in WW1.

Well, I must say, that crossed my mind too, but it seems not.  Both (with their different dates of birth) are on the 1939 Register; Gent living in Pinxton (where he was born) and Hill living in Warsop (near where he was brought up in Elmton).

Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

Thanks for looking.  I tried the War Diaries too, but I don't really speak "Army", so can never actually make much sense of them.  :-[
