Edward (James) LIGHT, born c1827, Portsea, Hampshire
« on: Saturday 26 June 21 11:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Edward LIGHT was transported for 10 years to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) via the Mandarin in 1843, having been sentenced at Portsmouth Borough Sessions on 02/04/1840.

I am trying to confirm his parentage etc. and have settled on the details below as probably correct given his convict documentation offers no information:

Father: William LIGHT, born 1792, a Mariner;
Mother: Mary LIGHT nee CHIVERTON, born 1803;
Baptised at Portsea, St. Mary, on 09/09/1827.
Brothers/Sisters, William, Richard, John, Eliza and Ann.

I would be grateful for any help.   Thank you.

Do you know if Edward married?  That might have some family details.

In 1841 Edward Light, age 14, was in Parkhurst prison. Ref HO107 405/6, page 9

Thank you for your messages.

Sadly, none of his convict/other documents, either in Parkhurst or Tasmania, contain reference to his parents.

A newspaper report says that Edward Light & James Griffiths, both aged 13, were found guilty of stealing 2 loaves of bread and other items from the house of George Cox of Portsea.  Both boys to be transported for 10 years.

The son of William and Mary seems to be a good bet.  He's certainly not with his parents in 1841.

The 1841 census puts James and Edward together (consecutive entries) in Parkhurst Prison.

The 1841 census doesn't give place of birth but they were both born in county.

There was only one Edward Light born Portsea 1827 +/- 5yrs and he was the son of William & Mary.
