This is a baptism in the French Protestant church of the Hospital in Spitalfields

The entries are in french but the occupations of the fathers are in English.

So is Jean Morgue’s occupation “turns a mill”???

I can't see a reason to think otherwise (although Mill is capitalized).

The first l of Mill is crossed out as it goes below the level of the second l .
A small corrected error .
I think there is nothing else really to match that.
Perhaps it is a term for someone who milled in the sense of grinding down -particularly metal “ milling to a thou” engineers and fitters will know about that in detail.

My interpretation of the first l is that he began it in the same manner as seen in Leconte above, then ran the tail up into the loop of the second l rather than extending it downwards.

My father was a miller/ turner - he made precision parts for x-ray machines and scanners, working from technical drawings.


Edit - not suggesting the person mentioned in the individual post was producing such modern equipment

It seems so odd phrasing it that way.

Wood turners they usually describe as such.
miller’s of flour are usually Millers

“Turns a Milll” Seems as if they didn’t know how else to describe his occupation and amongst all those weavers…..  unless it is something to do with producing thread?

Yes, not in those times nor to modern day precision but some other tools perhaps.
That phrase fascinates me “ milling to a thou”Wow!

A mill though is often a building where corn is ground  but we say millstones and we say pepper mill .
Textiles , spinning and weaving are done in a mill,I have never hear of any actual process called  milling going on in a textile mill .
A mystery.

I don't think anything has been crossed out or corrected.
I think the scribe has added the "turns a Mill" bit later, and has written over the "+" which should preced the mother's name (which has not been added).

So maybe there was uncertainty about the job description. As HD says, it is strange that "Mill" is capitalised.
And "turner" would have been more fitting, if he did indeed turn a mill...
