Ladies fashion store - 1940s - George St, Sydney
« on: Sunday 27 June 21 09:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all.
Hoping someone might have a good memory, or an idea how to find this one...

My Nan worked in a ladies fashion store around 1947 in George St. Sydney. She did some various jobs and her mother in law and aunt in law did alterations at the same store.

She thinks the owner was Greek. She thinks it was called Links/Lynx (verbal recollection only!). Name not 100% but she's pretty sure it started with an L.

I am particularly looking for a photo of store - if only a streetscape of the area.

Any ideas for searching or information welcome.
Thanks, Katharine.

I tried a few search terms on Trove in the hope of finding an advertisement, but didn’t see anything promising (though I admit that I didn’t look thoroughly). You might have better luck.

I also found this which may or may not be useful:

I just looked at the archives website but can't see any photos that jump out at me at the moment. I have also sent message to see if she can remember part of street, or nearby buildings/businesses.
The other list that was posted - again, can't see anything there that is relevant at the moment.

Thankyou both for replies.

I also couldn't see anything in trove that was relevant.
And I am not sure if there is a directory for that era?

It is very unlikely that he building still stands, but have you considered taking her for a virtual “walk” down the street on Google street view in case that sparks some memories?

If she can recall some nearby landmarks that may help narrow it down? Or if she can recall how she got to work … eg, caught the train, then walked X minutes down X roads to get there.

Just a couple of ideas which may or may not help.

Re directories for the area and era … I’m not sure, but you would expect there would be some. Others may be able to advise.

I don’t suppose electoral rolls would help, unless you could look through possible variations of the surname L****?  :-\

She thinks it could be 'Linda Jane' and somewhere near Capitol Theatre.

Okay....on Trove I found "Linda Jane Frock Shop" at 63 Market Street in Sydney. By 1959 it looks like it has relocated to cnr of George and Market St and is "Linda Jane Frock Salon".
Any further details appreciated. Still looking for photos of those two localities in those time periods.
