Regiment Identification
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 11:03 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could identify the regiment of my great uncle from the attached photo. I can’t get it any clearer. It is a tiny photo probably taken with a Brownie camera.
Many thanks in anticipation

For which country did your great uncle serve?
The building in the background appears to have America(n) written on it.

Thank you for your reply Tony. He served in the British army. He was a Newcastle lad. I noticed the sign behind his right shoulder. It looks like the photo may have been taken abroad, somewhere warm and he is also in the light coloured uniform which would support this.

Hi Julie, one thing in the photo struck a chord,on his shoulders you can see slip on epaulette patches
to me they match 8th army patches as found on this miltaria site(third one down) 8th army were the
famous desert Rats heres a bit of info of their war.

militaria site https://regimentals.co.uk/shop.php?ps=1&pg=170
So this puts him in North Africa or Italy which is backed up by the uniform. The Bad news is this could be
any regiment or corps(Dad was a Gateshead lad out there a driver in the Royal army service corps.Any
chance you could give us a name or any family chat about what he did?

Hello Steve
Thank you for taking the time to reply and many thanks for the links.  Unfortunately we don’t know what his role was in the army. All we have is the photo.

Thank's Julie, this is a website I've done research for there are many memorials recording names
of those that served but thankfully returned safely usually workplaces, workingmans clubs etc you
could search his surname which would give you options for residence places you might hit lucky for
instance Newcastle is divided into it's districts ie Fenham,Benwell etc.

Best of luck Steve.

Thank you so much Steve. I’ve done a quick search (Benwell) but nothing comes up. I’m not very good at understanding regiments etc. I’ve had more luck at finding his older brother (WW1) who sadly never came back. My grandfather served with the Royal Engineers in WW2. Of course, we know a bit more about his service. My Mum has some of his papers and memories of conversations about some of his service.
Thanks again
