Signature Comparison
« on: Wednesday 30 June 21 14:42 BST (UK) »
I have these two signatures and would like opinions as to whether any of you think they were by the same hand.

The first is from 1848 and the second from 1857.

Cheers,

Keith.

I don't think so, Keith.

To me, there are too many differences in the form of the letters. There are always differences in signatures that are a good few years apart but I think there are too many. It could be that one is when she was young and her signature had not 'settled' but .....

The r is the same though.

There are enough similarities to suggest it's the same hand to me.
Bumstead - London, Suffolk
Plant, Woolnough, Wase, Suffolk
Flexney, Godfrey, Burson, Hobby -  Oxfordshire
Street, Mitchell - Gloucestershire
Horwood, Heale Drew - Bristol
Gibbs, Gait, Noyes, Peters, Padfield, Board, York, Rogers, Horler, Heale, Emery, Clavey, Mogg, - Somerset
Fook, Snell - Devon
M(a)cDonald, Yuell, Gollan, McKenzie - Rosshire
McLennan, Mackintosh - Inverness
Williams, Jones - Angelsey & Caernarvon
Campbell, McMartin, McLellan, McKercher, Perthshire

The main similarities to me are the extended forward loop of the W to cover the i of Williams. The identical final letters of both names; the rather strange use of a loop in the first l but not in the second; the general spacing of the letters and the formation in general. Given the problems with limited space and unusual equipment I am more convinced they are the same the more I look,

I agree. This is very distinctive.

Same here.

For what it's worth, I believe the first name in both examples is Catharine (with a in the middle, not e).

I think they are similar now I've resized. However, the form of  a and e are different so I think you might be wrong about it being Catharine, Bookbox.

The second 'a' in 'Catharine' would seem to be formed the same as the 'a' in 'Williams' - certainly in the first clip.
I'd agree the first 'a' in 'Catharine' is different though Gadget.
Two different ways to write 'a'?
I know I have two different ways to write an 'e', so it's a possibility.
