Yes, wills are very cheap to get, and I have ordered James Woodger's.

Please tell us the gist of it when you receive it.
A tragic tale. It could be the basis of a drama or novel.
Were there children from James Woodger's marriage to Ellen Smart (Berry)?
What happened to Hannah Matilda Smart, Ellen Smart's sister?

James ....  was a draper's assistant 1861 boarding with a couple of dozen other draper's assistants, both sexes; 2 more from Scotland + some from other places in Lancashire.

Where did all those draper's assistants work? Was there a big store in Wigan in 1861? Another photo on "Wigan World" was of a family who had a draper's store, claimed to be oldest in Wigan. They had a Russian-sounding surname.

59 Standishgate was the White Horse public house, then there was a chemist druggist and then 55 which was Woodger’s drapers shop.

I’ve found a photo probably from the 1950s/60s which shows the pub and the next door properties. I think property next door to the pub was probably 2 separate properties as that seems to be as it is in the photo. The larger half, I think, was Woodger’s house and drapers.

You’ll need to google White Horse Standishgate and see what you think.

Maybe someone could do a link. There’s a much more modern photo so possibly the building is still there.

Is "Non con" on Find a Grave abbreviation for unconsecrated or non-Conformist?
Addresses of John Smart and Ellen Berry at their marriage was Bridge St.
Year for James Woodger is 1889.

The reports state that James Woodger lived/worked on Standishgate Wigan. That was the main road going through Wigan.
It was 55 Standishgate, there’s a list of the stock and contents for auction in the paper.

Adverts for auction appeared in newspapers from 19th July so no time was wasted.
Messrs Woodger & Marsh set up their business in Standishgate during 2nd half of 1870, judging by notices on newspapers. "Woodger & Marsh .... intend opening the premises Standishgate" ("Wigan Observer" July 1870). The shop was open before the end of 1870. They lent "a large number of banners" in September for an event. Adverts from October 1870 + for much of 1871 announcing the shop was open. Someone was in court Dec. 1879 for stealing hankies + mufflers.

James Woodger's sport was curling. Many mentions in "Wigan Observer". Wigan & Haigh Curling Club founded 1861. Haigh Hall was the English home of the Earl of Crawford.
Mentions of Wigan & Haigh club on:
  Wigan World
https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/stuff/wig1889.php
"Mapping England's curling places " on a history of curling blog.
https.curlinghistory.blogspot.com
There were clubs in Liverpool and Blackburn.

Thank you all, again.
Certainly I will share James  Woodger's will when it comes. They usually take a few days.

Thank you to Gibel for the proper references for the newspaper. No progress on that yet.

Curling in Wigan???? Who knew? He was a Scot, so it's plausible. They may have had colder winters then. I have a grainy VHS video of my Uncle skating on Taylor Park Lake in St Helens 1950s??

Yes, Hannah Matilda died young, as did Ellen's brother john. She would also have had a half brother, William, born to her father

Sorry, computer problems
. . . William, born to her father and his first wife Hannah in Ireland in 1837. He is on the 1851 census but I can't find him after that.
I don't think there were any children to the Woodger/Smart marriage.
The White Horse still seems to be in Standishgate, an old building surrounded by newer ones, on Google earth
Thanks again to everyone,
