St Helen's House, Newcastle Upon Tyne
« on: Monday 05 July 21 07:30 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have been researching my family tree on Ancestry, and my Great x2 grandmother apparently died at St Helen's House in Newcastle upon Tyne. I tried to google but cant find much info on this building. Hannah McLane passed in 1900. Has anyone got any information on this building at this time please?
Thanks in advance
Karen.

Did you get the place of death from her death certificate? If so, was there anything other than St Helen's House, Newcastle as the address?  (though street addresses were often not recorded if it was a nursing home )

Newcastle Evening Chronicle
29th May 1900 page 2 col 1
McLane - Byker. 59 Avondale Road on 27th inst., aged 77, Hannah, the widow of the late John McLane. To be interred Wednesday, at Jesmond Cemetery: lift at 2.30 p.m. All friends kindly invited. R.I.P

The Newcastle Electoral register shows a Patrick 'McLean' as registered to vote at 59 Avondale Road, Byker in the 1900-1901 register.

If St Helen's House is the place of death on the cert then perhaps she died at a nursing home but the funeral left from Avondale Road and Patrick McLean was a relative?

Pleased it adds to what you know.

Was it a death cert that gave the place of death as this St Helen's House or have you got this info from somewhere else?

Boo

It was actually only from someone's family tree information on Ancestry
I am trying to verify/disprove this information
I think I will try to find the death certificate on Ancestry/Familysearch
I will let you know how I go Boo :)

You could try contacting whoever the tree belongs to and enquire where they got the info.
Be aware that if this address at the time of death has been copied multiple times without knowing what the source is the answer may be 'from a family tree on ancestry' and the identity of whoever provided that info originally may be lost on the merry go round.

A copy of the death cert as a pdf would cost £7 from the GRO
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/

you need to register (free) and once logged in choose to search the GRO indexes.
Search Deaths for Hannah McLane died 1900 -  its the only entry that comes up. Select that and choose the pdf option and go from there.

Do update if you find the death cert details, by whichever route. I am nosey and do like to know how things turn out :-)

Good Morning Boo (probably evening there as I am in Australia)
I took your advice and contacted all the family tree owners who have listed the place of death of Hannah as St Helen's House, however I agree with you in that the original information will not be traceable. I have also paid for a pdf of the death certificate (I had no idea this was available for so little a cost so thank you so much) and I understand I will have the results in 4 working days. I will definitely update you!! Looking forward to getting it myself ;)
Many thanks again
Regards Karen.

it may be that at sometime, someone, somewhere did get a death cert and the address where she died was St Helen's House but at least this way you'll know for sure.

Still trying to find something that will tell me where it was but am failing. I tried Tyne and Wear Archives but their catalogue is currently undergoing maintenance so will keep an eye open to see if/when it re-appears.

Hi Karen.

Boo has been her usual terrific help! A further suggestion: you might also try a query to the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society. This is their site address: https://www.ndfhs.org.uk/

I've found them very helpful.

Good luck!
