Problems with my hotmail emails
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 14:56 BST (UK) »
Strange things going on with my mail. I delete all unwanted mail and then empty my delete bin.
Yesterday when I opened my mail all mail I had deleted since 2014 was back in my mailbox.
Today it is gone again.
Can anyone help me solve this, please?

Are you accessing it from the same device each time?

Phone/ tablets/ laptops/ desktops are not always in sync.

And how do you access your email account do you use a program like Outlook because if so and all these emails are in your inbox via your online account then they will download again to Outlook (or whatever you use) until you also remove them from your inbox online or change Outlook settings to the IMAP ones so what you do in one place is duplicated in the other.

Through a browser, or through an offline reader such as Outlook or the horrible Windows Mail app?

You can also empty the Deleted Items, on either scheme, by right-clicking and selecting "Empty Folder".

There can also be problems as Microsoft's servers synchronise amongst themselves. Don't panic yet!

Your deleted messages are in a folder shown in the left-hand column of Thunderbird. It may be called Trash or Deleted Messages, depending on how closely it matches Hotmail.

Normally, rather than erasing "deleted" messages, it shifts them into this special folder, just in case you hit Delete accidentally.

Right-clicking on that folder should show a menu which will have an item called something like "Empty Trash". Using that will clear out all those messages you have deleted.

With so many years to deal with, it may take some time to tidy up. There will then be another period while all those removals are replicated to the Hotmail servers.

In Thunderbird if you have deleted these emails and also deleted them from trash where they would go then they will be downloaded again if you have Thunderbird set to "keep a copy of emails on the server" so if you don't want this to happen then untick this setting.
