Deportation - Henry Roberts

It appears that Henry Roberts arrived in Quebec abord the "Corsican" on 15 October 1910. The manifest appears to say that he was "To be deported". It looks as though he was heading for "Winnipeg", he was an "Alien" and that he was a "Stableman".

He next turns up back in Birkenhead on the 1911, living with the Skinner family at 77 Beckwith Street  where he claims to be a "Cabman" - the occupations tie in with the family business which was running a Birkenhead cab company.

Later in 1911, he pops up again with his sister's family - Herbert and Maud Derrett at 782 Beverley Street, Winnipeg, claiming to have arrived in 1910 and to be a "bricklayer".

Is there any way of confirming whether he was actually deported? He seems to have been on both sides of the Atlantic between October 1910 and June 1911.

Any other thoughts?

Sometimes deportation was cancelled but i dont know how you d find out.

Can you be sure that its the same Harry Roberts with the SKINNER family ?

I have ROBERTS. Relatives who livecd at Beckworth street in Birkenhead too ! Great difficulty sorting them out. It does help if they lodge with in laws and keep the same profession !

Strange coincidence about Beckworth Street!

I can’t be entirely sure - maybe worth further research - but everything seems to fit. Henry’s mother was a “Hamlet” and her family started the cab firm. It would be a bigger coincidence if there was another HR driving a cab in Birkenhead.

If you come across a Roberts with the middle name “Hamlet” they’re one of mine!

The date he was enumerated in Winnipeg in 1911 was June 17th (written in the margins a few pages on where the enumerator left off for the day).  What day would he have appeared in Birkenhead in that 1911 census?

Sunday 2nd April 1911 was the date of the England & Wales census.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yes, the census dates were the first thing I checked, to see if it was possible.

Henry seemed to spend the next 20 odd years flitting around the world; but that’s another story.
