Hasselt marriage 1757
« on: Thursday 08 July 21 02:36 BST (UK) »
In the Hasselt book of marriages: The groom hails from Rouveen but I can't work out where he is residing. I can't work out the place of birth of the bride and it looks like she resides at the same place as the groom. I can't find a baptisms for any of their children in Hasselt. Where would be a good place to look. Many thanks in advance.

I'd say she was born in Hemel. The place of residence looks like Schoofter or Schoogter. I wondered if it was short for Schoolstraat in Hasselt. Can you provide a link to the document ?

Hi Shaun. I haven't got a clue how to post a link I'm sorry. I made a copy of the image from the original marriage books in Hasselt. I wasn't able to find any christenings of their children in Hasselt, Mastenbroek, Kamper, Kampereiland, Staphorst. I can't find anything on Hemel either. I'm assuming that it is in the Zwartewater region??

Here's a link to a colour copy https://www.archieven.nl/nl/zoeken?mivast=0&mizig=210&miadt=141&miaet=1&micode=0124&minr=14368078&miview=inv2&milang=nl

Click on one of the images and then go to page 44. On the previous page, the word is written more clearly in the place name Zwartewaters Klooster. I think the bride and groom were living in 't Klooster, which is 20km north of Hasselt.

Yes I can see it more clearly now!! Well done! So if one lived in 't Klooster, what would be the nearest place to get your children baptised? And where is Hemel? Thank you so much for your help.

You're welcome.

Try looking in the registers of Steenwijk, less than 5km from 't Klooster.

I think the entry reads Hamel, not Hemel. Further south of Hasselt, there is a place called 't Hamel.

According to http://tenklooster.nl/zwartewatersklooster/buurtschap :
“In de kop van Overijssel, halverwege tussen Hasselt en Zwartsluis, bevindt zich de buurtschap Zwartewatersklooster, ook wel simpelweg ’t Klooster genoemd.”
i.e. “t Klooster” was the colloquial version of Zwartewatersklooster. This hamlet is only abt 3 1/2 km from Hasselt, so it seems quite logical that the couple got married there.

FYI a possible baptism for one of their children:
son Jan - 1764, Rouveen

Good find TreeSpirit.

Hamel appears in a couple of records as "Hamel in Gelderland"; Gelderland being the province directly south of Overijssel.
