Marriage record 1856 J.D. Lang Minister
« on: Thursday 08 July 21 05:38 BST (UK) »
This is an extract from a marriage record at Scots Presbyterian church Sydney in 1856.  The handwriting is that of James Dunmore Lang who was the first Presbyterian minister of Sydney,
arriving in the Colony in 1823.

Need help to read the first word on the second line please.

Thanks,
Jen.

1856 ... the Presbyterians were in dispute with each other, one side led by Rev'd Lang separating away.   1856 was also the year that civil registrations of BDM events commenced in New South Wales.  And Rev'd Lang was also a politicial chap, a Member of the NSW Legislative Council.

It is possible that the snippet that our OP has posted is for a marriage in NSW that Rev'd Lang conducted in the early part of 1856 before civil registration commenced 1 March 1856, if so, likely he married the couple by 'special licence'.    I base this on what I can see in the uploaded image, it seems to be that Rev'd Lang has used the OLDER form which had no real provision for information about the parent/s of the bride or groom, nor where the bride or groom were born.  Sometimes the older forms did not even include their Christian names.   Rev'd Lang was considered litigious, particularly in the 1850s ...

Hi JM,   Thankyou for your background info. on Rev'd Lang re pre-1856 NSW marriages.  The marriage
record posted (in part) was pre registration and by 'special licence'.  Australian Dictionary of
Biography Vol. 2 1967 has an interesting account on Rev'd Lang after his arrival in Sydney in
             1823.

Hi,

Many thanks for sharing that info.  It confirms how difficult it would have been for you to work back to earlier generations for either the bride or the groom when there is so little on their marriage registration.  I wonder if you were able to find where they were born from the NSW civil registration information on their children's births (responding to the question about when and where the baby's parents were born) ...

Yes, this has been a difficult one JM.  The couple moved from NSW after the marriage.  The difficulty arose because the bride had changed her name on the MC so all research for her returned zero results.    Working backwards through the generations proved fruitful as her original name was
recorded on the birth record of one of her children. The correct DC revealed the place of birth as
Cork, Ireland and parents' names.    Many hours of scrolling through NLI Cork baptism records was eventually successful revealing that she was 7 years older than the stated age on the MC.  I found this only last week ;D  twelve years after I started the research, a lesson perhaps that we cannot always rely on the information provided by the bride and groom newly arrived in the Colony.
