Penrose Family Bristol
« on: Thursday 08 July 21 20:23 BST (UK) »
Am tracing the Penrose family for relatives in Bristol. Managed to get back to a Charles Penrose born 1790  (Ireland) I believe, which is the brick wall. So many sites Quakers etc, bit mind boggling to say the least.Anyone with any clues, I don't mind the hard work ! His son a George Bessett Penrose born 1817. Thanks Andy

Hello Andy and welcome to RootsChat.

I'm assuming son George marries Charlotte FLETCHER in 1849? Just to add to help in the search, that on the marriage cert it says his father is Charles PENROSE, Officer in Army.

That's all I found as well, will go through the Forces war records to try and find anything. Plenty of Penroses in Ireland, just trying to link them up.

Welcome to rootschat

I see that when George died his will noted that his surname was Penrose otherwise Bessett.

It is possible that George was illegitimate and perhaps his fathers name and/or his occupation were invented for the purpose of his marriage

ADDED

In 1851 he is calling himself Bessett

Wondered whether George Bessett's father could be George Charles, born 1790 ? Must be a reason why all Ancestry family trees are private from 1790 backwards, will try the Quakers records again thanks. Plenty of Penroses around the mid 1700's, just finding the correct one.

If his Georges father was in the army then there is a good chance that he was not born in Ireland.
Forces War records mostly duplicate information available elsewhere.

Found a Thomas Penrose 1740/1792 wed a Spiller 1748/1792. If these are Charles' parents it would mean that he was only 2 when they died - may explain the difficulty finding relations. Can't verify these facts yet.
