Unlisted address in Leeds
« on: Friday 09 July 21 09:13 BST (UK) »
My grandfathers was Arnold Rodgers b 1899 in Leeds. He is listed living with his wife Elsie May and their children at 15 The Terrace on the 1939 register. I have looked at the previous and subsequent pages to get adjacent street names and searched through the OS maps at the time but can find no reference to The Terrace. I've also drawn a blank with the Leodis photographic archive for Leeds. I can't think where else to look - any ideas.

A Terrace is usually a row of buildings within a street, rather than a street itself, the map places it in Malvern Street, and that is the address of everyone above them on the same page.

It may be worth you trying to find out what you can about Malvern Street.

I have a 1908 map which does not show it in its own right but if you look on the map there is a row of houses at the top of Rothesay Mount and View which may be it. Or there is row of 5 properties with gardens or yards at the top of Malvern Street which may be it. Going by the Register it seems to be between Malvern Street and Gladstone View.

Per 1930's newspaper ads it is/was "The Terrace, Malvern Street, Beeston Hill"

Just confirming looking at my copy of Leeds 1899 map the entry 'The Terrace' is listed under it's own right!
It is bounded by Ursula Street/Gladstone Street and Malvern Place Beeston Hill.

Malvern Street is a couple of streets away from where the Malvern pub was. The pub went about 10 years ago but the street is still there. I don't think 'the Terrace' would still be there as a lot of the houses in that area are look to be built in the last 50 years.

If a search for 'Malvern Street Leeds' is carried out and viewed in Google maps, whole area covered in 'red bricked' properties!
Looks to have been completely cleared of old properrties and replaced by 1960's housing.

Hi,

I think that "The Terrace" shows on this map,

https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/429075/431637/13/100431

It shows on a 1891 map.

I don't know why but using this link you have to zoom out to see anything.

Regards,
Daisy
