from Army to Royal Flying Corps
« on: Saturday 10 July 21 15:09 BST (UK) »
My wife's grandfather joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. All she can find out from Ancestry is that he joined from an army unit, but how can she find out which army unit it was?

The RFC was the army.  Do you mean he was in some other unit?

Would you like to give his details for a quick cross check?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Yes, the RFC was part of the army, but it looks as if he was in some other army unit and transferred to the RFC. His name was Ebenezer Cecil Saul.

His RAF record says 2/8th (Cyclist) Battalion Essex Regiment who served only in UK.  The dates he serve wth them are unclear.

Thanks very much for that. My wife is very grateful for the information.

It makes sense that he served in a cyclist unit as he was very keen on cycling and although he married and settled in Peterborough, he used to take his son, my wife's father, on cycle trips round his native Yorkshire.
