Farewell to a Soldier.
About 20 couples attended the residence of Mrs RICHARDS in View Street on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Private RICHARDS who left for Melbourne on Wednesday morning. Mr J HARRY presided .....a wristlet watch was presented to the guest by Mr J RICHARDS......

I'm a latecomer to this query. I have done a check of the PROV (Public Records Office of Victoria) records of unassisted migrants and found the following that might help (see attachments). I'd guess that the 24 year-olds might be the parents of the infant. Insofar as the birth registration, I had the same problem with one of my ancestors who was born at sea on the way out. Her birth was registered at Durban, Natal (as it was known in those days) and she was baptised in the Methodist Chapel there. The arrival passenger list lists her as "Infant - British subject."  This could be a helpful place to look. Here's the PROV site link if you are interested:
