WDYTYA: Inspiration Help
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 14:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

OK so I have been watching WDYTYA and the one of them was the Danny Dyer one.

In the middle the subject was on the English Civil War. It was said anyone of full age in the 1640s and 1650s would have had to have fought on one of the sides.

I've never thought much of the Civil war and it's affect on my family.

I have utterly no idea how to find out if any of mine were involved.

John Feldwick 1611-1662 of West Hoathly, Sussex.
John Gibb married 1634 Balcombe, Sussex.

Whilst I doubt I'll get back any further It'd be nice to know if they had any involvement.

Thanks for any help.

You may not be able to find any record of ancestors' involvement in the English Civil War unless they were officers.  If you know where they were before the war you can find out which side the local area and local bigwigs supported - this would give you a "best guess" on their possible involvement.

As a sidenote: if you research sideways into adult male siblings and cousins you may find some who disappear from parish records after 1642 - it is likely that at least some of these fought and died, having no known grave.

Philip

ADDED: not every adult male would have fought.  Clergymen, farmworkers, blacksmiths and other "essential workers" would have been needed to keep communities, food and supplies going.

Some men wouldn't have been fit. Old age, disability.
The lord of the manor where some of mine lived lost 2 sons on the same day on the Royalist side. It's a fair assumption that some of their father's tenants were with them. Those ancestors of mine had held land from 1500's and were styled yeomen in 18th century. A yeoman was supposed to join a muster when summoned by his lord, with a horse if he had one and whatever weapon he owned. Another line in the same manor were all ag. labs by 19th century. I'm now imagining them answering the call to war clutching bill-hooks and pitchforks.
It's not something to which I'd previously given much thought.

Read about local history.
Local archives. Do your ancestors names appear in estate records? Did they lease land? Were they likely to have worked for local gentry?
