Hi all.
I have a gentleman named Robert Edward Howe (born 1822 in Woolwich) who is listed as a police officer on his marriage certificate and eldest 2 children's birth/baptism records. I can't quite figure out where exactly he would have been a police officer as he moves around quite a bit. Is there any more info I can get about his occupation?
He's born in Woolwich and raised in London. His family moved into the Tower of London in 1845 where his father was a master gunner.
He marries in St Nicholas Church, Brighton in 1850 - listed as a police officer. Living at "Martha Street" - could be Martha Gunn Road, Brighton or Martha Street in Whitechapel (by the Tower).
Living in the Tower with his parents in 1851 Census. Working "at home".
His daughter is born in "a boarding house bar" in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire in 1852. Occupation police officer.
His son is born in Streatham, Cambridgeshire in 1854. Still a police officer.
Children are both baptised in Streatham in 1854. Police officer.
Next children are born in Islington 1857 and Chelsea 1860 but not baptised until 1862 so occupation at the time not currently known. Will get their birth certificates to check.
1861 he is a "Cooper, War Department"
In 1862 he is the foreman of the gunpower magazine in Hyde Park and he dies the same year.
All I know is between approx 1850-1861 he was a police officer. There is a Constable Howe "313 A" who appears in some newspapers in 1853-1856 around Marlborough Street, London. Where would I have to look for records if they even exist, and was it common for officers to move around this much?
Thanks!
