Deciphering town name in Galway Ireland
« on: Friday 16 July 21 08:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

Hoping someone can tell me the name of the town in in County Galway where my great grandfather was born.  The closest I can get is Kilimar but can't find any town by that name.  I have a possible birth record for the parish of Cummer but can't find any town similar.

Any help would be appreciated.

The second one certainly looks like Kilimar, so possibly Killimor, as suggested by Brentor boy.

I think the 2 names look completely different, though, even disregarding the fact that the first one has been amended.

I think the first one looks more like Kiliann/Kiliarn - but that doesn't seem to exist. There is a Killine in Galway, but that's a bit of a long shot...

If you go to:

https://www.townlands.ie/galway/

then scroll down to the very long list of every townland in Galway, it is likely going to be one of those.

A thought: why did they not write 'ditto' if the two names are the same ? This suggests they are two different places. Unless, that is, the word 'ditto' was not used in other entries that are definitely the same.

Good luck with your research.
(1) Janions of Cheshire, Lancashire, Hawaii, Vancouver and Seattle.
(2) Gregorys of Tarporley, Cheshire.
(3) Pughs of 'The New Pale' near Frodsham and Delamere in Cheshire.
(4) Nevills of Llanelly, Llangennech and Felinfoel.
(5) Yaldens of Ovington/Lovington in Hampshire.

Kilconieran townland in Kilconierin civil parish, actually closer to Athenry.

Hi, the first name is Killaan which is a civil parish in Galway sometimes used in official correspondence.
The second name looks like Killimor which is small village and the name of a catholic parish in Co. Galway also.

https://heritage.galwaycommunityheritage.org/content/category/places/killimor-heritage-group

See https://www.johngrenham.com/browse/county_civil.php?county=Galway for a map of those civil parishes in Co. Galway.

See https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/County_Galway_Civil_Parishes for a list of all the civil parishes in Co. Galway

Civil parishes are explained here - https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-land-divisions.html
Quote: There are two types of parish ecclesiastical and civil and they should not be confused, no matter how confusing this gets!

There are about 2500 civil parishes in Ireland. Each contains an average of 24 townlands and they are usually responsible for the compilation and maintenance of Irish land and property taxes and records.

The ecclesiastical position is rather more complicated because there are both Church of Ireland parishes and Roman Catholic parishes, and they have different congregations and boundaries. Typically Catholic parishes spread over a larger region than Church of Ireland parishes. The differences are best explained by a little history.
