James Murray born ca 1805 61st & 87th Regiments
« on: Friday 16 July 21 10:37 BST (UK) »
James Murray was born in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary. Born before 18 July 1805. Attested in 61st Regiment 1 Jul 1825 aged 19 yrs regimental number 467; served 21 yrs 66 days including 11 yrs 3 months in Ceylon. Promoted corporal on 29 Dec 1829 & sergeant on 11 Apr 1832. Earned 2 good conduct badges but deprived on them for gross neglect on duty & demoted May 1841. Transferred 1 Nov 1841 aged 35 yrs 3 months from 61st to 87th allegedly to 'serve with older brother' where he held regimental number 1502. Discharged to pension from 87th on 13 Oct 1846 aged 41 at Newport, stating an intention of living in Aberdeen, North Britain where he wished to receive his pension.

Have searched Scottish census but cannot conclusively find him in Aberdeen in 1851. Has anyone ideas as to where to go from here? He was an older brother of my GG grandfather Philip born 1814. Are there any descendants out there?

TIA, Josey

Oh brilliant thanks. Before Scottish civil registration then? At least I know he did actually move to Aberdeen & should be on 1851 census.

ADDED and this his burial

ScotlandsPeople has this parish death/burial record which seems a likely fit:

Sadly not, nor an occupation. Just getting more credits to get 1851 image.

I presume 'Pen' in the last column of burial record stands for Pensioner.
ADDED - I think it says 'Poor'. And the burial register page is headed St Clement's School - what does that mean?

James Murray, born Ireland, the linen bleacher in 1851, is still alive, living in College Street, in 1861. In that year he is a wool scourer. He is 57 and his wife 47. They have a daughter, Violet Murray, aged 13, although I suspect that might be one of the 1851 boarders.
