John PRIAULX death between 1902 and 1905
« on: Saturday 17 July 21 09:52 BST (UK) »
I have been contacted by a friend asking for help to find the death of John PRIAULX.

He married her relative Amelia REID previously THORNALLY in NZ in 1892
he appears in the newspapers in March 1902 qualifying for the pension.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19020313.2.68?end_date=31-12-1910&items_per_page=10&page=2&phrase=2&query=priaulx&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1839

Amelia died in 1909 and her will is on Archway. Dated 20 Feb 1905, She is described as a widow of the late John Priaulx

Can anyone see his death?
I feel I have tried every possibly wild card variant, but obviously I have missed the crucial one!

Thank you very much

Evening Mckha, :)

I can't find any record either. Have you considered a death in Australia, or UK, perhaps?

Iíve considered Australia, but havenít searched there yet. I think UK very unlikely, but I suppose not impossible.

Thank you for looking Spades.

He does seem to disappear after 1902 when he appears in the Street Directory.  I note that in 1890 in the E/R he was a Boatman.  What did that entail?

Just thinking out loud, perhaps he didn't leave NZ, could there perhaps have been an accident involving water?

Yes, Iíve been thinking along the accident lines too KHP.  Or just disappearing at sea.

Pension, so at least 65.
(Not my family so I donít know much about him at all.  (Friend is elderly and no longer has a computer but asked me if I could help tidy up this loose end in her research))

My understanding of Boatman, is that it is someone who works on boats, probably just in the harbour. Although of course the Waitemata is more than just a small harbour.

There is the Auckland Miscellaneous Files, (1908) where he is mentioned. Is it worth looking at?  You will see there is a mention of a Thornally.  John's daughter is mentioned as well.  I have no idea what it would tell you.

I think this will be to do with the estate of Samuel, who had no will but who had a life insurance policy.  There is a lot of back and forth about the pay out. But the actual estate was left unadministered by Amelia and after she died Emma Pascoe had to apply so as to sort out Ameliaís.   The documents in that file record the marriage of Amelia to John Priaulx . So I am assuming the 1918 documents will mention him in a similar fashion.
