Descendant of Reverend William Whitaker, Doctor of Divinity
« on: Sunday 18 July 21 12:06 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am in the U.S. and recently traced my family tree. I was just curious about my ancestor, Reverend William Whitaker.
He is reportedly buried at Trinity College in Cambridge. Are there any pictures of his grave?
Are there descendants of him still in England? A family home perhaps? I'd love to see whatever is out there. Thanks!

If he is the one Br1gau has found, I was wondering why, when he was associated with St John's College, he would be buried at Trinity.

Most Cambridge colleges have their own archives, so it might be worth asking directly what they know about him.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

David - that Find A Grave page is about someone more recent, though probably related in some way.

If that was him:
The church of St. John the Divine, Holme-in-Cliviger was founded around 1540 and was a chapel of ease to St. Peter, Burnley. There is a Whitaker vault and Whitaker tablets. Patron of the living at one time was T.H. Whitaker, Esq.

Registers for St. John, Holme-in-Cliviger seem to exist from 1742

Article about St. John, Holme-in-Cliviger in "Journal of Antiquities" 28th Dec. 2015.

Whitaker/Whitacre family of Holme Hall, Cliviger. Richard de Whitacre took his surname from the place he came from near Padiham. Pictures of Holme Hall can be found online. Badly fire-damaged this century.

This has his marriage in Lancashire (in a place that I, a Lancastrian have never heard of). Another source has the wedding in Cambridgeshire.
William's mother belonged to the Nowell family of Read, Lancashire. A prominent member of that family was Roger Nowell, High Sheriff of Lancashire, forever associated with the Pendle Witches' trial.
2 of William's Nowell uncles were churchmen and another was a member of parliament.
