I realise this is my second request this weekend. However thanks to the people helping on RootsChat I think I have nearly solved this.
I am wondering if there is a way of tracing the battalions that someone was attached to in the 1800s or if someone can help in identifying additional information about someone in an orbituary. I need to see if there is proof the orbituary links to the person in my tree. I have tried a fair amount now with very limited success.
In explanation due to a portrait I have inherited I am trying to identify a particular person.
I believe this portrait was a male called Richard Williams. Who is the nephew of William Henry William and Maria Williams (Pytches). The person in the portrait is a captain and is wearing a uniform consistent with the first guards. Although there are a couple of units with similar uniforms.
Currently I believe that Richard Williams is the son of Samuel Williams (William Henry's older brother) which will potentially mean he was Christened in 1788 in Bristol, Gloucestershire.
William Henry Williams died in 1841 and left his nephew Richard money in his will.
Maria Williams died in 1852. She leaves the widow of Richard Williams MD of Kingston in America £10.
As such Richard Williams died between these dates.
I know from previous help there is a grave on find a grave for a Richard Williams MD in MA, America however I know this is definately not the correct person as I have been able to trace the tree for him)
However there is a oribitury in the American/British medical journal 1848. For Richard Williams MD Surgeon of 67th Light Infantry. This is from Kingston City in Canada (however in the 1800s this would have been known as British North America) he died on 10 Dec (1847 or 1848, it is difficult to tell which year in the orbituary) as such the dates are correct for the death, also a surgeon would carry the rank of captain which is also consistent as well.
The difficulty is that the orbituary is the only information I can find about this person so have ground to a halt. It is however very likely that Richard would have changed battalions a number of times in his career and the portrait i have is of him as a young man. So currently I think it is highly likely to be the same person, I would however like some other corroborative information if possible.
Is there anyone who can help provide more information or point me in the right direction. I have literally spent weeks trying to solve this. It would be nice to know who Richards wife was as well if this is the correct person.
Any help I would be very grateful for.
If anyone is interested I can post a image of the portrait.
Cheers
Bob
