William Pike Birth query
« on: Tuesday 20 July 21 14:03 BST (UK) »
Hello Folks
Has anyone got the baptismal records for Newington Surrey 1857 – 1875
I’m particularly looking for a William (this may be a second name) according to the 1871 census he was 2 months old, I have found all his siblings  birth registrations entered, but cannot find William, his surname is Pike, Father George,  Mother Mary nee Page. I tried just entering both Surnames and date range but can find nothing, except for his siblings
The address on the 1871 census is St Mary Newingon, St Saviour, Southwark

Siblings are Mary Ann 1857, Elizabeth 1858, Jane 1861, Matilda 1863, another Matilda 1865, George & Edward (also called Charles) 1868 Twins and William who I can’t find. Birth Registration District is Newington for siblings

I have checked Find my Past, Ancestry, The Genealogist, The GRO , and Family Search on their birth registration listing and looked for Baptisms, also tried Non conformist Records for baptisms but still can’t find any of  the family.

Has anyone any ideas as to why William is not entered on the birth registration listing, I have also tried wild cards on all the web sites but to no avail
Hoping someone can help find him
Regards

Registration of births was not the responsibility of the parents until the late 1870's so he may just have been missed by the registrar

yes I did think of that, he was born early in 1871 according o the 1871 census on his marriage certificate of 1892 his age is entered as 22yrs so maybe he was born late 1870 and got missed by the registrar as you say, I may never know the answer.
Thanks

If he is shown as 2mths old in 1871 - then he must have been born 1871

Can you give the 1871 ref as neither Ancestry or Family search are coming up with a match

EDIT - indexed as Pille on Ancestry ::). William is shown as b Walworth

Youwho,

Couple of questions

Did George (aged 23) and Mary Aged 20) marry in 1859 (after the births of Mary Ann and Elizabeth)

In 1871 census George is aged 44 born Gravesend Kent and Mary 29 born Camberwell

In 1861 census George is aged 25 born Cornwall and Mary aged 24 born Surrey

Mary's father when marrying was recorded as William. Do you know any details of her parents particularly Mary's mothers maiden name.

Are they still alive in 1881

John

Hello Carol & John
1871 Census on Ancestry the name indexed is Pille they were living in Trafalgar Street rest of address on my original message, ref RG10/618 Foilo 5 Page 4,

Hello John
Answers to your questions
I believe so the only marriage entry I could find was the one for 1859 yes after the births of Mary & Elizabeth
George’s age and birthplace vary a lot on the 1861 he is 24 and born Cornwall, 1871  age 44 (I think this is an error either with the enumerator or when the list was constructed,  born Kent, on the 1881 census he was born in Lambeth
On the 1881 census on Find my Past the family are indexed as Vilre or Pilre they took a bit of finding, I did a wild card search. On Ancestry they are indexed as Virle
I haven’t done any research on Mary’s side of the family, I’m having enough problems finding the Pike’s at the moment
