Help with Yorkshire places
« on: Tuesday 20 July 21 18:51 BST (UK) »
I've just picked up my Scatchard research after a few day's off, and this time I'm looking at Harewood parish. I've only got two baptisms so far, but already having a little trouble with the places mentioned:

Ralph Skatchard baptised at All Saints Harewood 17 May 1619, abode given as Addleheade, and
John Scatchard baptised All Saints Harewoord 15 April 1627, abode given as Hubie. Hubie appears later as Hubye.

I can'y find an Addleheade anywhere, although I assume it's close to Adel, or Addle as it was once known, and Huby is in North Yorkshire in the parish of Sutton on the Forest, unless there is/was a Hubie/Hubye in Harewood.

Ideas, anyone?

Thanks

I usually go first to the "Where Is It In Yorkshire" page on GENUKI:
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YRY/Where

Possibilities:
Adel
Addlethorpe

Huby
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

The page at Genuki will get you a long way, but to add a bit of local knowledge to that, Addleheade will almost certainly be connected with Adel, the next parish to Harewood. And as you were wondering, there is a Huby in the ancient parish of Harewood - just off what is now the A658 Bradford-Harrogate road.

Do look at the Genuki pages for Adel and Harewood, as there are some useful maps, as well as a lot of other information.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have, and still use, GENUKI, but it looks like I need a new pair of specs after not properly reading the Harewood entry carefully  ::)

Brian, thanks for the Adel entries, but I have already been through the Adel and Otley PRs with a fine toothcomb, and I'm still waiting from some stuff from the National Archives and Borthwick Institute in respect of the Scatchards of that parish. The main reason for now looking at Harewood is to try and identify possible connections between families from both parishes - there's at least one marriage.
