John McGough, Belfast
« on: Wednesday 21 July 21 04:12 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace a John McGough who was born approx 1820 in Belfast.  His occupation was a cordonnier or shoemaker. He emigrated to Quebec Canada around 1845 and appears on the 1851 census for Quebec.  It is the Irish connection I am really after as I have most of his life in Canada.  Thanks for reading this and your help.

As there is no reply to my query can I assume there is no record of John McGough in Antrim or in the six counties covered by PRONI?  Thank you

Statutory birth registration didn't start in Ireland till 1864. Prior to that you need to rely on church baptism records. You haven't said what denomination John was. Most surviving RC records are on-line, but only some of the other denominations records are on-line, and not all churches have records for the 1820s. So if not RC, you might need to go to PRONI and look the records up. Ideally you need John's parents names from say a marriage or death certificate, to be sure of finding the right family. This may not be an easy search.

In the light of the above, I would add that PRONI's records include Co. Monaghan (and Cavan & Donegal) as well as the 6 counties of Northern Ireland, but if you don't have a reliable place of birth, then you are searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Several published trees have Thomas Gough and Elizabeth McKenna as parents if your John is the one who died 1875, Quebec.

Can you tell me where you found this?  On going through the mass of papers I have, I came across something I had missed.  John died 30th May 1875 in L'Isle-Verde, Quebec.  I'm sorry I should have said that at the start.  This could certainly be our man.
