Wilton Cemetery, Wilton near Odessa, Ontario.

Good Day Rootschatters

Does anyone know the date or year when Wilton Cemeteryburial was first in use? I am looking for a burial in 1880 and think I may have found the person on the OFCA site but dates are not mentioned on the site.

I have found a news story about the cemetery in 1884 but that is as close to 1880 as I have got.

I would like to know if someone who died in April 1880 could be buried there.

Thanks for reading.
Venelow.

Hi,

Findagrave has 938 listings for burials in the Wilton Cemetery.   Looking through the list, I can see several burials pre 1880

Here is one from 1854

From 1863

A couple of years earlier.

Do you have a name you wish to share and perhaps where they lived?

There are many small cemeteries dating from the 1790's in this area most don't seem to be surveyed.

The OGS has listings of most

Thanks for your responses Run Kitty and Don.

I did look on Find a Grave but the person I want to check on was not listed so I am assuming that there is no gravestone. I didn't think to look for graves by date. Duh!  I did look for a newspaper obituary but only found item about grave robbers at the cemetery in 1884.

Thanks for the link to the ogs-collections Don.

The name is Peter Irish and he was 73 (born about 1806/7) according to the death record. There is an awful lot of confusion between Peter Irish of Ernestown, Lennox and Addington and his cousin Peter Irish of Haldimand and Cramahe, Northumberland who was born sometime around 1800 to 1802. Many trees have very precise dates for vital records but no source for the information.

Thanks again Don and Kitty. If anyone has any information re Peter's burial in 1880 I would love to hear from them.

Hi Don

Jane was a niece of Peter's. She was the daughter of his brother Seth Irish 1800 - 1880. He died in Ernestown Township Lennox and Addington on January 29th 1880 at the age of 79 years and 11 months.
Seth was buried in Violet Cemetery Odessa. Seth and Peter's parents were Abraham Irish and Rebecca Cook.
