RAF Record Help
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 09:20 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

A friend of mine is looking for the service record or information about their grandfather, Harold Frederick Stanley Weeks b1906 Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Now, the record is online on The Forces War Records. I don't have access. Firstly, as this is just one record they need, is it worth paying £8 to join (is it easy to cancel?). Secondly, it's after 1939, which I thought meant the record was closed?

Any help/advice gratefully received.

All the Best, Suzanne.

Forces War Records do not have his full service record.  These are, as you thought, still held by the Ministry of Defence and your friend can apply for them.

See https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records and FWR own description of what they have:

Thank you!

I have told them that would probably be the case.

They will just have his name and number from AIR78 at the National Archives:

I have that information. I'd like my own grandad's, but know from the level of detail in his obituary that my uncle has them. I will have to push for a copy  ;)

Your friend will need a copy of the Death Certificate, a Date and Place of Birth and a fee of £30. For the Royal Air Force, you are asked to complete as fully as possible. My application back in December 2019 (before the pandemic) took 6 weeks.

Good Luck!

Just a little bit of info for those that have not heard already, Ancestry has bought Forces-War-Records.
