Genealogy subscription websites
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 11:50 BST (UK) »
I started my research in the 1970's when a lot of travelling was required. For what seems to be the last two decades and maybe longer I've been a member of both Ancestry and Find My Past and both have been useful in conjunction with visits to County Record Offices for copies of baptismal, marriage and burial registers, etc.

I know there is another site, The Genealogist, is this one I should be adding to my on-line subscriptions ?
Which of the sites has the best coverage of parish registers (middle and northern England) 1500's to 1800's ?

Thanks for any thoughts.
Pete

I had a sub for The Genealogist. Been meaning to renew it. I like the tithe maps.

There are pros and cons for all of them. I have tried them all and settled on FindMyPast, prior to that I was with the Genealogist. Have never been keen on Ancestry.

Try all three and see which one suits.

In your experience of having tried them, which is the best for English Parish Registers pre 1800 ?
I'll probably keep the Ancestry and FindMyPast for now but if the Genealogist is TOPS for PR's I might get that too.
thanks Pete

They all have different strong and weak points and quite frankly I can't really say that one is better than another. It really depends on what you want and where you are looking. Bet bet is the free trial so you can see what is out there.

Some people can access Ancestry or FindMyPast via library membership.

Thanks Rosie99
I shall do a free trial 14 day and see if they have a good coverage of English parish registers (Midlands and North) pre-1800
cheers

It's worth looking at Familysearchwiki

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Main_Page

Just type in each parish you are interested and it tells you which sites have what records.
