  Does anyone know about the Times archive? I believe it is subscription only, but I can't find details.

Its available to times subscribers https://www.thetimes.co.uk/archive/
And also through gale newspapers
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Worth checking what your local library service offers online. I can access the Times archive at home using my library card.

   I looked at Gale and it seems to be only for institutions? I will check the library - I think at one time they did have some Gale sites.
