Wigan has a good family history centre - and there's a site called "Wiganworld", free to join, and that has some people on there who are quite expert at ferreting out facts, including in the Westhoughton area - they helped us a year or so back. Could be worth asking on there? Hope your search goes well.

The subject of Bolton Workhouse once came up on the Battista thread.  Apparently, as I recall reading, the library has records.  This is the link which shows contact info.
It will show 'page not found' but the contact info seems to be at the bottom.
I think it was mentioned that they do 20 mins of research free but I don't know if this still is the case.  It might be worth emailing to ask.

Apologies, I'm still very intrigued by the journey from Chorlton to Bolton.  Just as a matter of interest how old was this child when his parents died?  You also say that there were siblings - have you traced them?

Hi
There are some Bolton workhouse records available free on FamilySearch.
Need to be registered and logged in.
Workhouse records for Bolton Poor Law Union, 1880-1905
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1370292

Various workhouse records, 1839-1941
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/375199

I've skimmed the lists. Probably too early unless the children went in soon after their mother's death.

"The Workhouse - The story of an institution", Peter Higginbottom's website, is the go-to site for information about workhouses.

History + illustrations of Chorlton Union workhouse on same website

Description of children's home, opened 1880s. New children's home opened at Styal 1898. Photo of small children there in next decade.

I recall noticing a workhouse governor/master having a young adopted son on a census return.
A visitor to Chorlton workhouse remarked on apparent kindness of governor & wife to the small inmates, saying that they didn't resemble Mr & Mrs Bumble in "Oliver Twist".

Styal Children's Home - yes I recognise that.  I was helping a friend with her family and after the husband died, the two boys went to Styal whilst she kept the 2 girls at home (1911 census).

Like BumbleB I think there must have been a reason for the boy to go to Bolton workhouse, if that's what he did.

Just for the record the Bolton Workhouse information on the Battista thread (on the Northumberland Board and currently 65 pages long  :-X) was found via one of the Family Search links given by jonw in reply #2
